Should I Build a Portfolio Career?

Have you heard of a “Portfolio Career”? It’s a response to economic changes, AI-driven shifts, and a desire for more work-life control and balance. Portfolio Career is also another way of saying you have Multiple Streams of Income, which a percentage of my career counseling clients pursue because they can use a variety of skills, pursue multiple interests, while at the same time gaining flexibility and financial security. I know personally that entrepreneurs develop multiple income streams within their businesses for similar reasons.

A February 10th article in Forbes, Portfolio Careers: Create Multiple Streams of Income With Job Security, by Diane Hamilton, describes the benefits, as well as the personal strengths you need to make it work well (Hint: tolerance for uncertainty is one of them). In addition to the economic drivers behind this type of career, she says,

“…Another big driver? Flexibility. Harvard Business School found that 40% of workers would be willing to take a 5% pay cut to keep the option of remote work, and 9% would give up 20% or more just to avoid the office entirely. Portfolio careers make it easier for people to structure their work around their lives, instead of living by someone else’s schedule…”

What do you think? Would you want to build multiple income streams within a Portfolio Career? Or maybe you already have? I would love to hear from you!
